The good and bad of Wix

Wix is a free website developer platform that allows you to easily build a free website using its many customisable templates without the use of any coding skills.

In this article, we’ll be looking at both the pros and cons of using Wix as a website development software.

PROS:

Accessible and convenient

Wix is a free website-building platform, making it very accessible and convenient for anyone interested in making their own website. Once you’ve created your account, it gives you access to a Wix domain, free hosting, brand ads, 500MB storage and 1GB bandwidth, which is sufficient for small businesses. Alternatively, you can also connect your own existing domain to it.

Not only is it easy to use, its step-by-step and dummy-proof functions make it simple for anyone, especially beginners who have no coding experience, to create their own customisable website. Their wide selection of “add-on” features in their app market such as Email Amazon. There are also over 500 high-quality customisable templates to choose from that are responsive and optimised for desktops, mobiles and tablets.

Safe and secure

Payment methods are also secure on Wix, as it is protected by 256-bit SSL encryption and you can use VISA, MasterCard, Amex and Discover to pay. Furthermore, you can invite others to edit and make changes in the website designs and other advanced settings.

Wix also automatically creates backups for your website that can be restored at any time, so be assured that any important data will not be lost.

CONS:

Difficult for more detailed customisations

As easy as Wix sounds, website developers who have knowledge in coding find it frustrating as there is no access or control to your website’s codes, making more advanced customisations is not possible. Although there are over 500 designer-made templates to choose from, once you have chosen a template, you cannot switch to a different template without having to start from scratch again.

Difficulty migrating your website in the future

There is also no way to export your data in Wix to another platform so you’re left with copy and pasting every piece of content and data into your new website manually. This free website builder is not viable for large websites such as those with more than 30 pages, as the navigation menu is only two levels deep, meaning complex sub structures are near impossible to accommodate.

Poor SEO-optimisation

Wix’s SEO optimisation is not the most ideal as they change image file names (eg. Wooden chair) into something cryptic (eg. 12cd3~mv4.jpg/) so when Google crawls through your website, they won’t understand it and might rank your website lower than someone else’s website who has “more” image alt text. Hence, growing your website organically on Google may be a slower process.

To sum it up, Wix will be great for small websites, especially for businesses that do not have any coding background and expertise, that want to use ready-made designs. Such small businesses include restaurants, hotels, blogs and photographers.
